All night vision devices including night vision rifle scopes use a system to enhance your view. This is achieved electronically. To understand how night vision works we are best to describe or liken it to a video camera. When you look through a normal rifle scope or binoculars you are looking at an actual scene which is usually magnified. With night vision you are looking at an electronically enhanced view of the actual scene or view.

THE MAIN COMPONENT

The main component of a night vision device is the image intensifier. When we talk about the tube we are talking about the image intensifying tube where a photo cathode converts light images into electron images and at the same time amplifies then converts the image back into a light image. The effect of this conversion gives you an image with a green tint to it and this is the view you have when you look through a night vision device.

INFRA RED ILLUMINATOR

While unseen by the human eye the Infra Red beam emitting from the illuminator projects forward of the night vision device and provides it with more light for the tube to work with or intensify. Most night vision devices come with a built in IR illuminator. When you turn on the illuminator you are able to add more light to the returned image. You will need to use the illuminator when there is little ambient light about. (like when you have heavy cloud cover at night or there is little light from the moon)

You can quickly pick out your mooring at night, find the channel marker that you can see on the marine chart, pick up a navigation marker with an extinguished light, clearly see another vessel and verify it's distance or just see who is out and about at night.

Hunting in the dark should be a calculated event. Careful planning is vital. You will achieve little by charging around in the bush at night. So carefully plan your night hunt and don't try to achieve too much on your first outing. You may find that you can see with night vision but it is not the same as being in the bush during the day. The opportunity of becoming lost in the bush is greater at night and with night vision you will be viewing things in just one colour. Being in the bush at night ill equipped even though you have night vision can be dangerous to your health or to your companion so take your time.
